#HomeToVote? We Can Help Those Coming Home For Good

#HometoVoteLast month’s marriage equality referendum had the world talking. One of the most discussed issues related to the referendum was the amount of Irish emigrants who returned #HomeToVote.

At Spratt Personal Shipping, Dublin we recently featured a post on the prospect of Ireland’s emigrants returning home due to the improvements in the economy.

#HomeToVote trended worldwide on Twitter and reinforced what we said in our aforementioned post: “it wasn’t always the case but…these days most emigrants eventually return home.”

As a young displaced Irish person told the Irish Times in the aftermath of the referendum: “many of us only intend to stay overseas for a short time, and plan to return to Ireland eventually having served our time in necessary exile.”

Another young emigrant said: “Ultimately, I see myself living in Ireland. The people most important to me in the world are Irish. I want to be near my family to take care of them in their old age. Many of my emigrant Irish friends feel the same.”

Under Irish electoral law, Irish citizens are only allowed to vote for 18 months after they move abroad and must travel back to Ireland to cast their ballot. Ireland currently does not allow postal voting.
