Can You Qualify for a Work Visa to Australia?

Australia

For generations, Irish people have found themselves moving to Australia whether driven by politics, the economy or a sense of adventure. The land down under is our opposite in many ways – large and wild and carefree. And we all know how opposites attract. But no matter what our reason for going is, we all need one thing: a work visa.

Getting a work visa to Australia isn’t simple or quick. It takes more than wit and charm. You need to be ready, willing and able to do work that Australia needs done. Until this month, aspiring Australian workers needed to have specific, verified skills that were needed or to opt for a more relaxed but shorter working holiday or harvest visa. But the Australian government has just announced another route: the Business Innovation and Investment visa programme.

The Business Innovation and Investment visa programme requires more than a bright idea. Applicants need to have at least $200,000 in funding agreements in place and have a 30% interest in their venture.   Buying an existing business is not a permitted option for this scheme. Clearly the goal is to provide employment for people already there, not to allow people in search of employment to enter. But there are still two other categories of visas for those dreaming of moving to Australia.

You don’t simply apply for a work visa to Australia. The SkillSelect programme allows you to submit an expression of interest that includes information about your education, training and work experience. This works a bit like a dating site. Australian employers can use it to contact possible job applicants and nominate them for a visa. The government can also invite an individual to apply for a visa. There are various types of skilled employee visas available, and the details vary. It is possible to get a Skilled Independent visa to move to Australia if you are self-employed.

You can try for a short term work visa instead. If you are 18 to 30 years old, you can apply for a working holiday visa for one year, but you cannot bring children with you on this visa. The idea is that you can work casual jobs while travelling. You cannot remain with the same employer for more than six months. You can use this kind of visa as a way to travel and work in short term jobs such as harvest and other seasonal work.

Or maybe you fancy the sort of life that is full of luxuries such as a yacht but don’t have the $200,000 lined up for a Business Innovation and Investment visa. In that case, you might want to look into the Superyacht Crew visa. This would let you work on a pleasure or sporting boat provided it is at least 24 metres in length. But keep in mind, the boats permitted aren’t allowed to carry cargo, so you might need Spratt to transport your belongings.
